Towns want more money for garbage pickup

NORWICH – Chenango County officials want to raise the amount credited to each of its 21 townships for roadside garbage pick up from $100, which was set in 1994, to $250 per year.

Supervisor James J. McNeil, D-City of Norwich, made the motion before members of the Public Works Committee last week. Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law seconded it. The motion passed unanimously and will go before the full Board of Supervisors in April.

Town of Otselic Supervisor David J. Messineo suggested the increase due to the higher fee at the county’s landfill for taking in tires. That rate increased last year from $1.25 to $2 per automobile tire. Messineo also pointed to the public health risk from mosquitoes that live and multiply in junked tires left along roadways.
