SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville has been trying to educate its students about the dangers of drug abuse and takes part in an interesting program to get kids involved. The Eckerd Drug Quiz Show is a competition for students, testing their knowledge of drugs and the negative effects they have on people’s lives.
“This is purely a beneficial program. It’s a great way for the kids to learn and have a lot of fun,” said middle school health teacher Lynda Stoddard. Stoddard has been an advisor of the program for seven years and participated in it herself when she was younger. “I remember doing it when I was in school, and when I started teaching here, I wanted to get students involved because of all my great experiences.”
The activity is currently open to sixth to eighth graders from the middle school, but Stoddard said she wants to expand it to the high school level one day. The kids are tested about general drugs, stress and health information throughout three rounds of competition. The first round poses questions against the team, and their captain answers. The second round is individual based, and only the student asked is allowed to answer. No help can be given by their teammates. The third round can be perhaps the most exciting when teams compete against each other in a buzzer round. Each team tries to beat the clock by buzzing in before the other and answer the question correctly.
