County gets grant for bike path

OXFORD – Chenango County has been awarded a federal $775,000 transportation enhancement grant that will be used to build five-foot wide paved shoulders along county Route 32 from Oxford to Greene specifically marked for use as bicycling/pedestrian trails.

Department of Transportation Director Randy Gibbon said stencils, signs and bicycle racks would be provided at various points along the pathway on both sides of the county highway. Approvals are still forthcoming from the state’s DOT, but a 2008 construction date is being planned. Gibbon wrote a grant for the funds in July 2006 and received approvals in early November.

This is an EXCELLENT project to accomplish, that is way overdue considering all the Federal Money that has been available since the early 90's. STBC rides along the Chenango River frequently, with lunch or other stops at local businesses in center of Oxford or Greene. I would just pray our locals will NOT throw out beer bottles or other trash along our beautiful roadways. I doubt passers-through would be senseless enough to trash a scenic road!
1. Will the county make a later trip to re-PLOW the roadside and move snow far enough over towards ditch, to have a clear bikepath in the winter after the all roads have been plowed/sanded for routine traffic?
2. How soon will this bike path be extended to meet Rt 12 above N. Norwich?
The Rolling Hills of Southern NY have some of the worst roads any where in NY that gets snow considering current lack of shoulders, small ruts, potholes, and trash.
