Trojans, Bobcats remain unbeaten

Greene 47, Harpursville 6

GREENE – Harpursville gambled unwisely, and the house – Greene – raked in the yards and racked up the points

In nearly a repeat performance of last year’s drubbing of Harpursville, Greene retained its unblemished record winning its Section IV Class C division opener.

“We talked about the importance of winning our first division game, and we know we have a war coming up with Unatego next week,” said Greene coach Tim Paske.

In just over half a game, Greene senior fullback Keith Savory piled up 143 yards on eight carries. Harpursville stacked the line of scrimmage putting eight and nine guys up tight, and once Savory cleared the initial wall of defenders, he was home free. “We worked on a scheme to attack their defense, and Keith went almost untouched on his runs,” Paske said. “Harpursville took a risk on defense and was burned.”

Savory had scoring runs of 5 and 52 yards in the first quarter sandwiched around Corey Breck’s 65-yard TD strike to receiver Justin Van Wert. Savory had a 65-yard TD run in the second quarter, and Greene led 39-0 at halftime.

The Trojans posted a season-high 319 yards on the ground, in large part due to the efforts of offensive linemen Mike Kehl at center; guards Justin Smith and D.J. Beckwith; and tackles Jesse Mares and Tyler Kehl. “Our guys up front did a tremendous job, and they did a nice job checking down when they had to,” Paske said.

David Micha and Chris Engler scored on runs for Greene, and Tyler Kehl returned an interception six yards for a score with just 58 seconds left in the game.

“We had a couple breakdowns on defense in the first half that led to their only score, but we executed on defense much better in the second half and shut them down,” Paske said.

The Trojans limited Harpursville to negative-eight yards of rushing in the game and 154 yards of total offense. A year ago – on homecoming weekend for Greene – the Trojans won 49-0 and allowed just 81 total yards.

HANCOCK – One streak ended, but a more important one was extended.

After 10 scoreless quarters, the Bobcats finally gave up some points, but at that point the contest was well at hand as they bumped their record to 3-0 – one win more than all of last season.

“Just all facets of the game went well for us,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Special teams, defensively and offensively, it just kind of clicked for us.”

Willie McGinnis ran for five touchdowns and 155 yards, and Chad Cornish added 135 yards on the ground. Nate Seymour contributed on touchdown rushing to start the game and returned a punt 50 yards to paydirt early in the second quarter.

The B-G defense got into the scoring act scoring on a fumble recovery in the fourth. Most importantly, turnovers that had plagued the Bobcats in the first two games were trimmed to a single cough-up late in the game. “Cutting down our turnovers was a huge point of emphasis this week, and we were worried about this being a trap game,” Mattingly said. “But the kids came out focused and fired up. We did another great job defensively, and our biggest improvement came from our offensive line. We’ve come a long way, but we know we need a great week of practice to prepare for Delhi this week.”

McGinnis scored on runs of 5, 3, 30, 2, and 5 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter.
