Sleepy driver causes near-miss on Rt. 12

NORWICH – Wednesday evening an elderly man fell asleep at the wheel and swerved across oncoming traffic on to an empty yard, narrowly missing a telephone pole and crashing into an 9-foot ravine.

The crash took place just after 7:30 last night. The driver, Augustine Zieno, was very shaken up but sustained only minor injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, Zieno’s car, a maroon 2001 Buick LaSabre, drifted across the yellow divide line on state Route 12 a few hundred feet north of the county route 46 (Lower Ravine Road). Zieno’s car sideswiped a telephone pole and continued to veer another 40 feet across an empty lawn before plummeting nearly 9 feet into a ravine.
