NORWICH – An oppressive heat wave is expected to move through Central New York today and tomorrow, making outside temperatures feel between 105 to 110 degrees.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued an “excessive heat warning,” for this area, describing what will be a “humid airmass” moved in by 10 a.m. today.
“An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely,” states the National Weather Service bulletin.
Relief from the airmass may come as early as Thursday, with rain and thunderstorms predicted, but the bulletin states that by Friday and on through the weekend, the heat should be decreased significantly.
Throughout the next few days, local officials are asking citizens to monitor their health and take all necessary precautions. All of them urge everyone to stay hydrated.
“Push fluids,” said Chenango County Public Health Director Marcas Flindt. “Avoid alcohol, and drink throughout the day, don’t wait until you are thirsty.”
Flindt said to listen to the signs your body gives off.
“If you are out and you realize you’re not sweating anymore, if you have a tremendous feeling of overwhelming heat; listen to your body, cool off – get inside and do it.” Flindt said to take this warning seriously; don’t over exert yourself; avoid long periods outside; and take immediate action at any sign of fatigue and sickness. A quick tip Flindt provided was to run one’s wrists under cold water for a few minutes. He said it helps to cool down the blood stream, thus helping to cool down the body internally.
