Vets Home hosts cruise-in, car show

OXFORD – What started out as a simple way to financially support shelter companion animals at The New York State Veterans Home has turned into an annual celebration.

The Broome Chenango Canine Help Organization (BC-K9) has teamed with the Vets home to host its’ 3rd annual “Visit our Vets” cruise-in and car show Saturday, at The New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

The show has doubled every year and this year is no different with over 100 cars anticipated for the event. Some cars will be provided by Cruisin’ Buddies Car Club and the event is open to the public. Registration is at 11 a.m. Opening ceremonies are at 1p.m.

The Vets home pets are from the BC-K9 and are trained therapy animals. State funds are required throughout the year to fully care for the animals’ needs.

When the New York State budget was not passed at its anticipated time, the NYS Veterans Home employees wanted to create an event that would ease the financial constraints and benefit both the residents and the “vet’s pets”.

“The car show is one of two events that the residents look forward to all year long,” said head organizer of the event Karen Wood. “The residents seem more vibrant to be able to talk with the drivers and reminisce about the cars.”
