Henry Szabelska


Henry Szabelska, 85, formerly of DeRuyter, NY, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2019, at the NYS Veteran’s Home at Oxford.
Born in New York, NY, on March 10, 1933, Mr. Szabelska was the son of the late Leo and Mary Bielakowska Szabelska. He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, DeRuyter. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1954. He retired from Norwich Shoe Company and Half Hollow School District. He was also a life member and past lieutenant of the North Babylon Fire Department Station 4.
He is survived by his sons, Henry Edward Szabelski of DeRuyter, Peter Michael (Kathy Jo) Szabelski of Cincinnatus, and Christopher Joseph Szabelski of Norwich. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Peter Michael (Jan) Szabelski of Auburn, Jessica Lee Szabelski of Norwich, Michael Edward Szabelski of Cincinnatus, Mercades Szabelski of WI, Jenna Szabelski, Christopher Szabelski, Jr., and Sofia Szabelski, all of Norwich; and a great-grandchild, Harper Rae Szabelski.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Irene Alice Szabelski, in 2006.
A prayer service will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Paul Alciati officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, DeRuyter, at a later date. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
