SHERBURNE – On Tuesday, the Sherburne pony league baseball team played a doubleheader against Richfield Springs, where they lost both five inning games, 7-5 and 7-3. Sherburne made a late rally in both games, but it wasn’t enough.

In game one of the doubleheader, Richfield Springs excelled six runs before Sherburne could answer back and scored one final run in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Blaine Fleming drove home Trent Marinelli to put Sherburne on the board. Fleming would finish with two RBIs in the game. Then, Daren Brown was hit by the pitch to bring home a run before Haden Holcomb’s fielder’s choice and Richfield Springs’ error would lead to another run. Sherburne scored two final runs in the fifth, but failed to tie the game.

In the loss, Sherburne’s Wesley Fisher struck out five batters, including two crucial strikeouts on a full count (three balls and two strikes). Thatcher Bugbee relieved Fisher before he started the second game of the doubleheader.

In game two, Richfield put up seven runs again with two in the second, three in the third, and two in the fifth inning. Sherburne was unable to get on the board until the fourth inning when Marinelli scored on a balk. Wesley Fisher also scored on a balk in the fifth while Marinelli contributed with an RBI double. Another late rally that came to an end.

On the mound, Bugbee went 2.2 innings and picked up a crucial strikeout with two runners on before being pulled. Owen Brown finished the game in relief.

Sherburne looks to bounce back as they head to Cooperstown on Thursday for a 6 p.m start.
