CHENANGO – The Chenango County Sheriff's Office and local law enforcement are teaming up to offer 'no questions asked' prescription drug take-back locations in Sherburne and Greene this weekend.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 24, at the Sherburne Fire Station at 15 West State Street and the Greene Police Department at 49 Genesee Street, officials will accept anonymous, no question asked, donations of prescription or illicit drugs.

The initiative is to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – both pose potential safety and health hazards.
