OXFORD – An offensive clash between the Oxford Blackhawks and the Morris Mustangs over four quarters of basketball ended with Oxford coming out the winners of the 57-55 final score.

With five seconds remaining in the game and the score at 55-54, Oxford unintentionally fouled the Mustangs’ Matt Murphy. As Morris was in the double bonus due to the Blackhawks’ 10 fouls in the half, Murphy went to the line to shoot two free throws.

Murphy missed the first of two and Oxford’s head coach Tim Davis called a timeout, trying to freeze the Mustangs’ shooter. Out of the break, Murphy hit the second foul shot, tying the contest at 55-55.

On the ensuing inbound, Oxford’s Matt Roach passed the ball to Jacob Murrer who gave the ball back to Roach. The Blackhawks’ inbounder heaved a shot in the direction of his basket but it was going to end up short.

With not much time left on the clock and most thinking about the extra basketball that was expected to be played, CJ Smith of Oxford sprinted down the floor to catch the ball that was falling short of the rim. He tossed the ball up to the basket and it feel through the net as the buzzer sounded to give the Blackhawks the win.

To go along with the game winner, Smith ended the night with a double-double as he tallied 10 points and was strong on the boards with, finishing with 14 rebounds.
