Purple Tornado tennis stays hot, remains on top of division

NORWICH – Norwich topped Chenango Valley in back-to-back matches, winning the second in a 7-0 sweep Monday afternoon.

The match of the night belonged to Norwich’s Zayne Harper. When the Purple and Chenango Valley matched up last Friday, Harper lost to James Wyatt in three sets. Head coach John Stewart tweaked Harper’s game plan for the second match.

Using the changes, Harper cruised through in straight sets (6-0 and 6-4) and took the fourth point win , securing the team match win for the Tornado. “Harper’s [match] was a great match to watch,” said Stewart. “He stuck to the game plan and finished strong.”

Josiah Shaver at first singles for the Purple was trailing most of the first set but was able to tie the set up at 6-6. Forcing a tie breaker to determine the winner of the set, Shaver took the extra tennis with a score of 7-5. Shaver went up early in the second set.

Having to fight off a late surge by CV’s Carter Wilson to hold on, Shaver won the match with a 6-4 second and in straight sets.
