BINGHAMTON – With the entire crowd anxiously awaiting the outcome of the final match – and the team score tied at 3-3 – it was Norwich’s Ava Granquist who secured the decisive fourth point.

Ava defeated Katie Mach of Chenango Valley, at 6-4, 7-5 in the fourth singles spot.

“It was a great match, we ended up squeezing it out 4-3,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart. “She (Ava) won 6-4 first set, then she was up 4-3 in the second. At 5-5 she was up 30-Love, was serving the next point and the girl rolled her ankle. She (Ava) went up 40-Love and basically won that game, then won the next to close her out.”

Ava was able to hold on for the wild 7-5 win over Mach, earning Norwich their first win of the 2017 season – a league win nonetheless.

Aside from Ava, Norwich saw Caroline Stewart earn a win in the singles category – while the duos of Natalie Bennati and Riley Marsh, and Parker Walsh and Katie Gawronski, each earned wins for the lady Tornado.

“Basically we took two out of four singles, and two out of three doubles. Caroline Stewart was down 4-1 in the second and then pulled off five straight games to take the third point,” said coach Stewart.
