BEAVER RIVER The Sherburne-Earlville 2016-2017 varsity wrestling team stepped back and surprised themselves with a solid team win this past Saturday, at the Section III Class D tournament.
The 12 point win over Dolgeville at 164-152 for S-E came by way of two individual champions Ethan Eldred (152), and Bailey Walzer (170) while the Marauders also amassed two second place finishes, two third place finishes, a fourth, two fifths and a sixth. This master performance from S-E saw all 10 entrants into the tournament earn a spot on the podium.
The Otselic Valley Vikings also were present in Beaver River on Saturday, Feb. 4, where they finished 10th out of 14 teams saw the Vikings place five out of 10 of their wrestlers with one individual champion Nate Purtell at 99 pounds.
99 pounds: Nate Purtell, a junior for the Vikings and number one seeded wrestler at the weight, proved to all why he garnered the top-seed. Purtell snagged a first place championship at 99 pounds for Otselic Valley, going 2-0 on the day. Purtell would see action for just 3:04 for his total amount of time actually wrestling earning an easy pun over Lucas LoRusso of Cooperstown in the semifinals; before handing out another pin to Andrew Walseman of Copenhagen at 2:17 in the finals.
113 pounds: A Marauder seventh grader, Jason Price snagged a solid outing at such a young age placing sixth overall in the weight. Price earned a draw in the first round where he would face Brandon Carpenter of South Lewis. Carpenter handled Price in two periods of action, when he caught the Marauder in a pin at 3:53. The early loss sent Price to the wrestle-backs where a win over Brandon Chartrand of Copenhagen came by way of decision at 6-1. Price was then secured a place on the podium with the victory, however, would be sent away from a potential third place with a loss to Riley Dalrymple of Copenhagen in a tough fought loss at 4-0. Price would earn a rematch with Carpenter of South Lewis for the deciding match between fifth and sixth, to which Price would again suffer a loss by pin at 1:25.
120 pounds: An early matchup in the first round of the weight for Otselic Valley's Micah Lyon and S-E's Joe Straight proved to go in favor of the Vikings as Lyon (sophomore) defeated Straight (freshman), by pin at 3:01. Straight would then be sent to the wrestle-backs where he faced off against OV's other 120 pound wrestler. Dakota Hackett, an OV freshman, sunk to the wrestle-backs following an early win over Logan Kantor of of Cooperstown (9-3 decision) before succumbing to second-seeded Muhamed Hirkic of Onondaga by a score of 6-2. Lyon would join his fellow Chenango County wrestlers in the wrestle-backs following a loss in the semifinals to top-seeded Joey Powers of Port Byron by pin at just 1:08. Ultimately, OV's Hackett did defeat Straight by technical fall at 19-3 eventually advancing to the third place spot with an 11-7 win over Kantor of Cooperstown. Lyon would eventually face off against Straight for a rematch at the fifth and sixth place spot to which S-E would get the better the second time around, securing a 15-7 revenge win.
126 pounds: Mike Doeberl, a Sherburne-Earlville junior snagged a solid outing to which he found his way through the wrestle-backs for a third place crown when all was said and done. Doeberl, the fourth seed, claimed an early win over Oscar Lozada of Dolgeville by a major decision of 9-1. Advancing to face the top-seeded Lorenzo Scarano of Little Falls, Doeberl was simply outmatched in skill, when he was shut out by Scarano 16-0 for technical fall loss. This loss, ignited a fire in the Marauder which carried him to two consecutive wins. A pin over Jake O'Brien of Copenhagen advanced Doeberl to face Fred Amacher of Poland for the potential third place finish which Doeberl rose to the challenge in fashion embarrassing Amacher by a major decision score of 18-5.
132 pounds: Jonah VanVoorhis, a junior at the weight snagged a solid fourth place finish going 2-2 on the day. VanVoorhis took the early 7-0 win over Sam Lytel of Cooperstown to advance to the semifinals where second-seeded Anthony Matzler of Copenhagen handed VanVoorhis a loss by pin at 1:20. Sitting at 1-1 and heading to the wrestle-backs, VanVoorhis snagged another early win over Nick Feasel of Little Falls by a tight 3-2 decision. Using up his energy with the 3-2 win, and being outmatched by Dakota Green for the third place spot, VanVoorhis slunked to a fourth place spot with a loss to Green by pin at 1:43.
