Class B Tournament

ONEONTA – Norwich and Maine-Endwell are locked in a tie for first with 24 team points after Thursday's opening matches in the Section IV Class B Tournament at Oneonta High School.

In doubles play, NHS seniors Colin Stewart and Zan Stewart played to their top seed advancing to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Johnson City's Johnny Nezelek and Kris Kirkpatrick. Tornado seniors Brendon Budd and Alec Weaver, the three seed, did not receive a first-round bye and needed two victories to advance.

Budd and Weaver beat Oneonta's John Scott and Lars Smit, 6-4, 6-4 to join their teammates in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, both Maine-Endwell doubles entries advanced to match Norwich's team points.

Over at singles, Norwich's Matt Craig and Jamison Luke posted victories. Luke won in three sets in the opening round before bowing to top-seeded Freddy Purpora of M-E in the quarterfinals.

Craig won a two-hour marathon matchup against Maine-Endwell's Alec Greene, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

"In the end, Matt just outlasted him," said Norwich coach John Stewart. "Greene played exceptionally well in the first set, but we knew that would level out. Matt was steady and consistent in all three sets."

Play resumes today at 2 p.m., Stewart said.
