School’s open: Think safety first

NORWICH – With the 2012-2013 school year getting underway today, the Norwich City Police Department is focusing once again on student safety, particularly when it concerns getting students safely to and from school.

“The Norwich City School District has over 2,500 students,” noted Police Chief Joseph Angelino. “Additionally, Holy Family and Valley Heights Academy have many more. Add to those numbers the teachers and staff who are all converging on the same locations, at nearly the same time, and there could be problems unless people are alert and patient.”

This year will also see some changes in regards to school crossing guards, added Angelino. Crossing guards will be located at two intersections on South Broad Street – at Beebe Avenue and Hale Street – while the post at the intersection of North Broad Street and Newton Avenue has been discontinued.
