CICERO – A pair of Norwich sophomores placed at the New York State Division II Track and Field Meet, this past weekend at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Record-breaker Matt Murray placed second in the D-2 400-meter dash with the second-best time of his career timing 49.59. Murray was the lone underclassman in the finals, and fell half a second short of Section I’s Kevin Hunter of Pawling. With two years left in his varsity career, Murray is already the school record-holder in the 200-, 400-, and 800-meter distances, and is also part of two record-breaking relays.
“I think Matt has a real good shot the next two years in a few events,” said Norwich coach Shaun Horan. “It will be tough to decide what to put him in, but it’s a good problem to have.”
Murray improved on his best times throughout the season, and although he fell short, Horan says he expects more improvement in the next two years. “He’s disappointed he didn’t win, and he wanted to get into the Federation finals,” Horan said of his sophomore standout. “For him to get second is pretty nice, and we really couldn’t ask for much more.”
