Making sure 'every woman counts' in Chenango

NORWICH – Working as part of the Chenango Health Network, the “Every Woman in Chenango County Counts” campaign is continuing its mission of encouraging annual screenings for women throughout the area.

The organization has reason to celebrate its efforts as it has influenced hundreds to be examined and tended to the needs of nearly 40 women who have had cancer scares the past year, said program coordinator Lori Kemmerer.

Presently, more than 700 women are enrolled in the campaign. Through a steady stream of phone calls, Kemmerer will have contacted more than 800 women by the end of the year, reminding them to make an appointment to be checked. The campaign remains a vital source for breast, cervical and ovarian cancer outreach, she added.

As part of their outreach, the Every Woman Counts campaign also promotes free cancer screenings through the New York State Department of Health Cancer Services Program for women who are uninsured or underinsured. “This is such a great service ... and so many don’t know it’s available,” Kemmerer said.
