Owego wins pitching duel, ousts NHS from playoffs

Owego 3, Norwich 2

NORWICH – Owego scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning to win its first-round sectional playoff game over Norwich Friday.

Steve Tatich drew a lead-off walk, stole second, and he scored on Stephen Yanchus’ game-winning single to left field. “Both teams played pretty sharp,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “Their pitcher (Jake Shelley) was really outstanding, and Mackay (Hotaling) did a nice job of pitching for us.”

Norwich (7-6-1) grabbed the early lead on Nate Winans’ RBI single in the second inning. After Owego pushed two runs across in the fourth, Norwich tied the game in the fifth. Winans led off with a single, and Dennis Oralls was substituted for Winans as a pinch-runner. Oralls stole second, then came home on Nick McCullough’s RBI single. McCullough topped the Tornado hitters with a 3-for-4 day and two stolen bases. Winans was 2-for-3.

“It was a game that came down to the last inning,” Martinson said. “It was a great baseball game and a shame someone had to lose. We played great baseball, and we can’t be disappointed other than we didn’t get the win.”
