Head-on crash closes down Rt. 8

NEW BERLIN – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office said a pick-up driver attempting to cut off a tractor trailer traveling along State Highway 8 Wednesday was responsible for a head-on collision between the two.

Crews from the New Berlin, South New Berlin and Norwich fire departments arrived at the scene at around 12:15 p.m. and discovered the pick-up driver trapped in the wreckage.

South New Berlin firemen, using the jaws of life, freed 55-year-old Kevin Swift of South New Berlin in less than 10 minutes. South New Berlin Fire Chief Kevin Christian said Swift appeared to have avoided serious injury and was talking to emergency crews at the scene. Out of caution, Swift was airlifted by the LifeNet of New York Helicopter based in Sidney and flown to Wilson Regional Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
