Oxford Drama Club presents “Carousel” this weekend

OXFORD – Song and dance will abound this weekend as the talented young thespians of the Oxford High School Drama Club take to the stage for their production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award winning Broadway musical, “Carousel.”

Audiences will have two chances to see the show: at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights in the Oxford Academy Performing Arts Auditorium. Tickets are $4 for students and senior citizens; $5 for adults.

Based on a work by Ferenc Molnar, “Carousel” follows the ill-fated romance of carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Jacob Carr) and factory worker Julie Jordan (Hailey Branham), as well as the relationship of Carrie Pipperidge (Megan Murphy) and Enoch Snow (Addison Kubik). The story takes a tragic turn when, desperate for money, Billy attempts a robbery. When it goes wrong, he takes his own life.

A note to audiences: Bring tissues. Described by Director Mike Moran as a tear-jerker, “Carousel” is not the light-hearted fare Oxford’s drama club has favored in recent years with its productions of “Hello, Dolly!” and “Once Upon a Mattress.”
