Norwich 7, Chenango Valley 0

NORWICH – It was a sweeping start to the season for the Norwich tennis team, who did not give up a point in blanking Chenango Valley Monday in a non-division matchup.

“I expected to win, but I didn’t expect a rout,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “We had two three-setters, but everything else was pretty decisive.”

Norwich was thoroughly impressive in winning all four singles matches in straight sets. Bryn Loomis, Sophie Stewart, Jessica Lerner, and Reva Seager allowed just six total games to their CV opposition, and Seager won her match, 6-0, 6-0.

Katie Orioli and Emily Stewart, returning this year at first doubles, outlasted their opponents, Lexi Lamb and Megan Santacrose taking the third set, 7-5. Kristi Orioli and Alyssa Stagliano rallied from 4-1 down in the third set to win at second doubles, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. Gina Mecceriello and Shaniqua Yaccarino won in straight sets at third doubles.

“We have some new combinations at doubles and people are getting used to playing with each other,” Stewart said. “We still have some kinks to work out in doubles, but our lineup will be solid from top to bottom.”

Norwich hosts Owego on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
