Rt. 12 accident claims life of Afton woman

OXFORD – A fatal car accident involving three vehicles took place just south of the Village of Oxford at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Erin R. Larsen, 25, Afton, apparently lost control of her tan ‘98 Dodge van in the middle of a brief snow flurry causing it to fishtail into the opposite lane, perpendicular to oncoming traffic, according to New York State Police.

Larsen’s vehicle was hit by an oncoming 2006 GMC Envoy driven by Elizabeth M. Gay, 71. Larsen was killed in the impact; Gay was rushed to Wilson Hospital by ambulance and suffered moderate face and chest trauma.

The third vehicle was following Gay’s Envoy and slid into the rear of her SUV, unable to stop due to the weather conditions said eyewitnesses. The third vehicle was driven by Steve Mead, 31, and had a passenger, Ryan Natoli, 27. Neither were injured and left the scene with third parties.

The New York State Police is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident. Emergency crews at the scene said weather appeared to have been the likely culprit.
