Going to the movies.....1950
Well, we have taken back enough bottles to pay our way into Smalleys theater. It will cost us 14 cents for a great double feature. The main show is "Frontier Pony Express" starring Roy Rogers and the second show is an Abbott and Costello movie Called Africa Screams. If we wanted we could sit through a second showing, but the popcorn and candy was pretty well gone by then. I can remember coming out of the theater and being blinded by the sunlight. On the way home we would discuss what we had just seen and tried to imitate the actors. Ah yes, good times...simple times.....

Was this theater in the same place as the current one? What was the price on bottle returns back then? How much did it cost to spend a day out like this with candy and popcorn? Thanks Pappy, these memories are so much fun to read.

Glad you like them. I enjoy doing them. You are taxing my memory on Smalleys. It was on East Main St. near the RR tracks. Just where I don't recall. Soda bottles were 2 cents and milk bottles were a nickel. If we came up with 50 cents, we could have a ball. Popcorn and candy were 5 and 10 cents. We would take the bottles back to Welchs Store on Silver St. The Historical Bldg. on Rexford St. has some seats from Smalleys on display. A nice place to visit. porchia says:

That is so neat. I can only imagine what Norwich looked like back then and imagine what 50 cents would buy. Now it's $6 just for the ticket and popcorn and candy would run about $5. The bottle returns have not increased all that much. There is so much history in this little town. Thanks again Pappy.

Smalleys was right across the street from the Post Office. When we came out from the movies we used to cross the street and go across the tracks where we could go into this little newsstand next to the drug store and buy penny candy. Also spent many days roller skating on the top floor of the Fire Station. That was a lot of fun back then.
Can anyone remember collecting the tops from the round icecream containers. They had pictures of cowboys and movie stars on them. We took them, when we had enough, to a place up near Gold St. and turned them in for full size pictures of the same stars.

Boy, are you bringing back memories. I haven't thought of these places in years. Thanks for the local of Smalleys. Never did the skating bit. Didn't know it was there. I have several ice cream tops with the pictures. Made by Velvet ice cream in Norwich. My uncle worked there and use to bag the Cherrios. I collect old Norwich stuff and have quite a collection I've bought on EBay over the years. Leave a Comment
