GREENE – In what was true to the grit and perseverance of so many Section IV playoff games between solid teams, the Whitney Point Golden Eagles escaped by a hair from the upset-driven Trojans.

Tuesday, Oct. 25, marked the semifinals of the Section IV Class C championships in varsity field hockey, as the fourth seeded lady Trojans attempted to knock off first seeded, Whitney Point who will now be seeking their third consecutive New York State Championship.

“We played great and really got ourselves back into the game after the half,” said Greene head coach Christine McCabe. “Just unfortunate the last call at the end really ended our season unfairly.”

Down 2-1 the lady Trojans set up for a penalty corner shot – at the end of the second half, after time expired in regulation – to which Whitney Point goalkeeper Katie Cafferty missed on the save as the ball found the back of the net. That is when – mid-Trojan celebration, thinking they had extended the game into overtime – that the referees called off the would-be goal due to a minor discrepancy.

According to the referees, the shot came from the left side and beyond the arc, therefore, a Greene player would have needed to touch the ball once it entered inside the circle – which they did not.
