CHENANGO COUNTY – With the April 18 tax deadline looming, Congressman Richard Hanna is warning local residents to beware of scams that could cost them big money.

Hanna issued a statement this week reminding people to be leery of phone calls and emails from individuals claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) who are actually impostors trying to defraud them.

Scammers often use fake refunds, phony tax bills, or threats of an audit. Some emails link to fake websites that look legitimate.

“What people need to remember is: never give out any personal information over the phone,” Rep. Hanna said. “Be wary of unsolicited telephone calls, especially callers who are aggressive and relentless. These criminals often prey on older people, so pass the word along to elderly neighbors, friends and family. Let’s do all we can to prevent this scam from spreading further and hurting more hardworking Americans.”
