UNADILLA VALLEY – Spurred on by a spectacular game from their point guard, Sierra Badger, the Unadilla Valley Storm came up just short against the Sidney Warriors 51-41 last night, Jan. 8.

“Even though it was a loss, I think we played a lot better than we did in Deposit, for sure. The refs that refereed our game in Edmeston came up after the game and said that this was a completely different team,” said UV head coach Brandi Whitbeck. “We hustled more; we drove to the basket more. There was a lot of bright spots tonight.”

Sidney came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders and raced out to a quick four-point lead. However, that lead was short-lived as the Storm came right back to even it up.

The teams would continue to trade scores after each going on a scoring run of their own. The Warriors began to take control of the game midway through the second quarter and finished the half on a six-point run to lead 22-12 at halftime.

UV started the second half in fine form, courtesy of some great play from number 11, Hunter Lakin, who netted four of her nine points on the night in the third quarter. The Storm went on a five-point run to cut the lead to just five points midway through the quarter.

A superb fourth quarter from Sidney number 1, Mackensie Gravelin ensured that the Warriors came away with the win. Gravelin hit seven of her nine total points in the final quarter.

The star of the night for UV was Sierra Badger, who had a game high total of 17 points. For Sidney, number 13, Carolee Pierce, finished their top scorer on the night, grabbing 15 points.

Whitbeck had some positives to take from the loss, saying, “We definitely kept our intensity the whole game, which is something we’ve really struggled with. We’d have a good quarter followed by two bad quarters. We couldn’t manage to put a whole game together. Tonight we did that.”

With this latest loss, the Storm slip to 4-5. They will be hoping to put the pieces together when they face a formidable foe in Hancock away next Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 5:30 p.m.
