DVD Patrol: Best movies of the year?

We deliver as promised, Patrollers! The Toddster has brought the team together and he had an important question for them: Tell us your favorite movie of the year. They all had some good responses. Our leader, The Toddster, will join in. See if you agree with any of them.

“Straight Outta Compton”

“Straight Outta Compton” was the movie of the year, so far. Notice I said so far. There are some that are in theaters, or that have not come out yet which might end up trumping it. “Straight Outta Compton” caught my interest immediately due to the fact that it reminded me a lot of Eminem’s “8 Mile.” I was a huge fan of how the storyline followed semi-accurately to the true life events of NWA. My complaint about the movie was it seemed if you weren’t a fan already of the story or rap group, the movie did not provide a very gripping storyline.

I witnessed many friends of mine start watching the movie and lose interest until the very end when the big medical news is announced about ‘Eazy E.’ Ultimately these friends I mentioned did enjoy the movie as well as I did, but I think the producers and actors could have done a better job keeping the crowds attention. However, the actors that were chosen did a phenomenal job portraying their real life counterparts, specifically for the characters of rappers, Eazy E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube, as well as their manager Jerry Lawler.

The movie will go down as a great movie that everyone will have seen and remember, but one that just did not live up to its hype, much like “8 Mile.”

Entourage

2015 was a year filled with cinema classics and reboots. “Mad Max” and “Jurrasic Park” both made us question what year it really was when they were both in theaters at the same time. My favorite movie of the year was not one of the big box office hits and it probably didn’t make it on the radar of any movie critics. “Entourage” was a spin-off of the hit HBO series by the same name. It finally got a movie this year after the series ended a few years ago, and gave most of us fans a little more closure than the series did.

The whole two-hour movie felt like one long episode, which is a good thing. Though the actors were a little older it felt like the series did back in its prime. Drama and Turtle (yes those are actual names) both were just as outragous as they have always been and the movie really captured the spirit of the ridiculousness of the series.

I won’t spoil the ending but it gave the whole series closure and gave the characters the send-off that they deserved.

The Good Dinosaur

When “Toy Story” hit the silver screen 20 years ago, the characters were made from plastic and wood for a reason. That reason? Computer animation hadn’t progressed to a point where animators could fine-tune details like shadows and hair that give characters a life-like appearance.

Baby, we’ve come a long ways. Comparing the first “Toy Story” to the most recent Disney Pixar film, “The Good Dinosaur,” the animation of Woody and Buzz is – pardon the pun – primitive.

That’s why I pick “The Good Dinosaur” as my favorite flick of 2015. Admittedly, I know nothing about the plot (I’m assuming it’s about a boy and his dinosaur... who’s good). Regardless, there’s been plenty of fuss over the entirely computer animated film, particularly related to nature scenes throughout the movie. I’ve never taken a crack at computer animation. In fact, I know just as much about it as I do the plot of the movie. But I can imagine the painstaking process of animating a hyper-realistic jurassic world. Disregarding the cartoonish style of the dinosaur itself, the animation truely is breathtaking.

Pixar has always been at the cutting edge of computer animation with each new film they produce. Given the progression of the company’s work, from plastic action figures to pre-historic forests, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for moviegoers next.

Ant Man

A lot of people seem to see a pattern from me. Recently, the column just celebrated its' ten year anniversary and a lot of our number one movies have been super hero related or has something action related. That being said, why mess with a good thing? My favorite movie this year was "Ant Man." I'm always happy when the filmmakers get a comic book property right and are faithful to the material. They took a great character and took it a step further.

Meet Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Scott was an electronic engineer until the company he was working for was exposing all of their customer's email accounts. When he was discovered, he was sent to jail. Now he's out and he just wants to get a job and be with his little girl. Being out hasn't been easy and now the only way to make any money is to steal. Scott gets the attention of Henry Pym (Micheal Douglas). What no one knows is Henry used to be a superhero known as "Ant Man." Now his secrets have been taken and he wants them back. His protégé Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) took his shrinking technology and now wants to sell it to the highest bidder.

Aided by his daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly), Henry thinks she can help train Scott with his Ant Man suit and get his tech back. Can Scott get the job done?

Here are some great movies and I think folks will like them. Look into them. Some are still in theaters or are on DVD. Merry Christmas, Patrollers!
