Woman Takes $63,000 In Unlawful Welfare

NORWICH – A City of Norwich resident has been arrested for allegedly unlawfully claiming over $60,000 in welfare money over a five-year span.

Investigators say 32-year-old Rhiannon Browne of Norwich was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 9 for welfare fraud in the second degree, a class C felony; and offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, a class E felony.

It is alleged that Browne failed to report a change in her household composition which resulted in her receiving $63,238 in assistance which she was not entitled to. The time frame for the alleged act was November 2008 through June 2014.
