BINGHAMTON - Competing in the state qualifying tournament on Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, the Norwich doubles team of Makenzie Maynard and Caroline Stewart finished in third placed and will travel to the state tournament this weekend.

In the first round of the tournament Maynard and Stewart beat out their opponents handily in straight sets to move on to the second round. Here they would face the Horseheads team of Tatum Benesh and Rachel Spermer. Maynard and Stewart took the match into a third set tiebreaker only to fall 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).

On the next day of the tournament the Norwich girls were fighting to get back to the third place match and would compete against a tough Union-Endicott team. Maynard and Stewart would still win and face Binghamton's Abby Combs and Allie Westbrook in the third place match. Winning in straight sets, the Norwich girls would take third and a spot in the state tournament.

"They're really starting to gel as a good doubles team," said Norwich coach John Stewart. "We took care of some teams from bigger schools and I'm really excited to see what they can do in states."

Maynard and Stewart will compete again this weekend at the state tournament in Latham starting on Friday, October 30.
