Man pleads guilty to assaulting toddler, will serve prison time

NORWICH – 29-year-old Zane T. Abbott, of Mitchell Street in Norwich, NY, entered a plea of guilty following months of felony hearings.

Abbott was originally charged with assault in the second degree, a class D felony; and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.

These charges stemmed from an arrest made this past February, when Child Protective Services reported to the Norwich Police Department that they were investigating a case involving an alleged assault.

At approximately 5:31 p.m. on February 26, 2015, the NPD received a call from Chenango County Child Protective Services.

When NPD detectives and CPS workers investigated the incident last February, NPD officers found reasonable evidence to arrest Abbott.

Abbott was the boyfriend of the three-year-old victim's mother.

The toddler was under Abbott's care when the injuries were sustained.

The victim was first transported to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital to be treated for the injuries. The victim was then later transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, New York for further evaluation.
