Oxford 5, Afton 3

OXFORD – Oxford avenged a 5-3 loss to Afton from two days ago scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to rally for the win Thursday afternoon.

Afton threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but a game-inning double play initiated by Blackhawks shortstop Kyle Crawford quelled the threat.

Through the first four innings, Oxford had left seven runners on base. In the fifth, an error on Kevin Davis' lead-off flyball kick-started the home club’s offense. Richard Ryan's long drive to left-center yielded a ground-rule double and Oxford's second run of the game. After Jon Heggie reached on a dropped third strike and he subsequently stole second base, Dylan Depew's two-run single gave Oxford the lead.

Davis added a solo home run to centerfield for added insurance to support his winning pitching effort. The lanky junior gave up just two hits to the Crimson Knights striking out six and walking one.

"We kept battling through and it was a nice win," said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. "We are two evenly matched teams, and it showed on the field today. They played a little better defense than us, but we came though in the end with a couple of clutch hits."

Oxford (7-7) hosts Harpursville Monday.
