OWEGO – Norwich won seven of eight matches Friday and Saturday at the Owego Duals tying for first with Union-Endicott and Newark Valley. A total points tiebreaker gave U-E the championship, but NHS coach Terry Hagenbuch was satisfied with the performance.

“We’re getting points from all over the place and we’re really starting to jell as a team,” Hagenbuch said. “The winning and losing of the tournament makes a difference to the kids, they wanted to win, and we felt they did enough to win, but ultimately, the goal was to get some great matches for our kids, and we did that.”

Norwich’s marquee win of the event was a 40-33 triumph over Newark Valley, a team it has not beaten in recent years at the Duals. Midway through the match, Carter Hubbard scored a big 6-2 win over the Cardinals’ Gianno Silba, a fourth-place Section IV Division One place finisher last year.

With Norwich clinging to a four-point lead, Trey Muserallo cinched up the win in the final match of the evening earning a takedown with three seconds left to win his matchup. “Trey’s wrestling really well for us right now,” Hagenbuch said, who noted that Muserallo already has more wins this season than all of last season. “Trey’s teammates are counting on him, and he’s counting on himself.”
