NORWICH – Voters in the Norwich City School District overwhelmingly approved a $15 million repair and building renovation project on Tuesday.

The proposal was passed in a 285-75 vote among district residents, giving way for a building project to be divided among each of the district’s four schools, as well as the field house and bus garage.

By using accumulated funds from state aid, existing debt payments and reserves, school officials say the project has been narrowed so it will bear no impact on the local tax levy. Moreover, it allows for security upgrades and repairs in every building, said School Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan.

“Final details and design are still being worked on and I anticipate that work will start in the Summer of 2016,” he added.

The NCSD building subcommittee is currently working with Tetra Tech, the architecture and engineering firm selected for design of the project. The company also designed the $38 million building expansion project for the high school and middle school in 2005.

The district has outlined a spending plan of $2.48 million at Stanford Gibson Primary, $2.57 million at Perry Browne Intermediate, and $5.17 million at the middle school and high school building. Additionally, $22,500 will be spent for drainage infrastructure at the field house, and $692,400 for safety and energy upgrades at the bus garage.
