Former Corrections Officer, alleged road rage murderer arraigned on  17 counts

NORWICH – The alleged Bainbridge road rage shooter and murderer was arraigned on 17 counts Friday, Dec. 5 in Chenango County Court.

John M. Guzy, 56 of Bainbridge was arraigned on charges related to the shooting of Derek S. Prindle, 26 of Afton and his father, Derek D. Prindle 60 of Afton. Guzy – a former corrections officer and retired police officer – allegedly told authorities he was in a fight with the victims due to road rage.

The 26-year-old died of his injuries. The deceased young man's father recovered after receiving surgery for his gunshot injuries.

Derek D. Prindle attended Guzy's arraignment with his friends and family on Friday.

The 17 charges Guzy was arraigned on included murder in the second degree, a class A-1 felony; attempted murder in the second degree, a class B felony; two counts of assault in the first degree, a class B felony; two counts of criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, a class B felony; criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony; criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a class D felony; tampering with physical evidence, a class E felony; driving while intoxicated, a class A misdemeanor; and six counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor.

Guzy attended court with his newly-hired private attorney, Benjamin Bergman of Binghamton.

The accused murderer pleaded not guilty on all counts.
