Sherburne-Earlville Tournament

SHERBURNE – A dominant first quarter gave Vernon-Verona-Sherrill an 11-point lead in the first quarter of the S-E Tournament title game en route to 58-32 whitewashing of Unadilla Valley Saturday evening.

Jeremy VanDuLuitgaarden scored nine points in the first quarter, and he shared team-high scoring honors with freshman teammate Davey Moffett with each scoring an even dozen.

Sherburne-Earlville salvaged third place in the tournament defeating Central Valley Academy, 59-49.

The final margin, though, was a bit deceiving as the Marauders built a 21-point lead after three quarters, and subbed their bench liberally over the final eight minutes. “We played outstanding defense in the first half, really the first three quarters,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard after the win.

Ben Khoury scored 18 for S-E, and was named to the all-tournament team. Derek Capria chimed in with 11.

Unadilla Valley’s stingy defense allowed it to advance past Central Valley Academy Friday, 43-37

Brett Hanslmaier scored 13 points and Hank deGlee added 10.

The Storm trailed 13-2 in the opening quarter before switching to a zone defense with the 6-foot-4 Hanslmaier at the top of the zone.

“It’s (the zone) not what I like to play, but that may end up being our defense because of our size,” Osborne said.

The Thunder were held to just 13 second-half points by the Storm, and were held without a field goal the first 5 ½ minutes of the fourth quarter allowing UV to open a six-point lead.

The host Marauders led throughout the second half until the final 2 ½ minutes when a barrage a free throws sent the Red Devils in front for good in a 50-45 win.

Justin VanDuLuitGarten hit a floater on the baseline drawing his team within 43-42. After a defensive stop, V-V-S forward Moffett hit a single free throw to tie the game. The kicker, however, was a technical foul levied against the Marauders following Moffett’s play. Jeremy VanDuLuitGarten canned the two freebies giving his club the lead for good.

Over the final 1:36 of play, V-V-S made eight free throws.

Capria led S-E with 13 points, while Cody Marango and Khoury bucketed 10 apiece.

The Marauders host Sauquoit Valley Tuesday.
