NORWICH – Over 500 participants, ages 6 to 88, completed the 33rd Annual Norwich YMCA Turkey Trot five-kilometer race on Sunday, with multiple-time winner, Shaun Horan taking the finishing line first clocking 17:04.

Murphee Hayes claimed the overall women’s title in 19:59 on a day where temperatures climbed to nearly 50 degrees at race time.

“Every year the weather is a factor in our entries because a lot of people register the day of the race depending on how good the weather is,” said race director Shannon Gawronski, who also serves as Fitness and Wellness director at the YMCA.

Gawronski said volunteers were again an integral component of the race’s success, and many people were involved in the race preparation days and weeks before the actual race.

One big boost, Gawronski said, was the increased number of volunteers directing traffic at intersections along the race route. “Keeping everyone safe in the race was a huge focus,” Gawronski said. “We have more kids running this race every year.”

The overall winners and age group winners each won a turkey for their efforts, Gawronski said.
