Sherburne-Earlville 50, Norwich 29

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville coach Bim Palmer said his team was just hanging on by a thread while it waited for injured wrestlers to return.

The healthy bodies Palmer put on the mat against visiting Norwich Thursday evening were certainly no slouches, and the Marauders earned their first dual win of the season stunning the previously-unbeaten Purple Tornado matmen.

“We brought some of our young kids up. They fought against some of their better kids, and kept them from getting extra points,” Palmer said. “And there were a couple of matches that went our way that we didn’t plan on.”

Norwich was down early in the meet, but looked to close the gap at 132 pounds. NHS’s Cole Rifanburg led the Marauders’ Hunter Owen by six points entering the final period, but Owen pulled off the big throw and subsequent pin. Later, at 195 pounds, S-E’s Cody Marshall trailed Jacob Perrone by two points midway through the second, but rallied for the comeback pin.

“We just got outwrestled tonight. Plain and simple,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “I think we had some guys resting on what they have done rather than what they want to accomplish.”

S-E senior Kevin Dunshee (126) opened the meet with a technical fall victory, Jared Jillson (138) and Arron Welch earned back-to-back decision wins for the hosts to help pad the advantage.
