Union-Endicott 54, Norwich 23
NORWICH - Just as Norwich coach Mike Chrystie suspected, Union-Endicott’s offense was explosive and dangerous.
In a non-league tussle Friday night, the Tigers racked up over 625 yards of total offense, and scored with lightning-quick efficiency in a blowout victory.
U-E had over 300 yards of rushing and 300 yards of passing, while averaging nearly 10 yards a play. Sammy Davis ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offensive onslaught, and quarterback Joey Orlando went 13-for-24 for 304 yards and three scores. C.J. Krowiak hauled in a 67-yard bomb from Orlando for his first of two TDs, then raked in a 14-yard score from Nick Yesensky to put the Tigers up 28-9 at halftime.
Norwich had its moments on offense in the second half, but simply could not keep up with the fast-break U-E attack. “Early on it was a game, but we were not moving it well enough offensively,” said Norwich coach Mike Chrystie.
U-E fumbled a punt inside its own five early in the second, and Norwich recovered at the two to set up Mike Sutton’s two-yard TD run. A short while later, Norwich recorded a defensive safety to make it 14-9. “We were feeling pretty good at that point, but then they hit us with a couple of deep balls, and the flood gates opened,” Chrystie said.
U-E scored four touchdowns in a seven-minute span covering the end of the first half and the early part of the third to create a wide bulge. “They were very athletic on the outside and Orlando throws a good ball,” Chrystie said. “We never could stop them when we needed to.”
Norwich scored twice in the second half, the first on Mike Oralls’ 68-yard dash, and second on Mike Sutton’s 27-yard TD pass to Zan Stewart. Norwich (3-3) plays at Susquehanna Valley next weekend.
JV notes: Norwich failed to score on four trips into the red zone in an 8-6 loss to U-E’s JV. Nick Murphy led the Tornado offense with 128 yards rushing and one touchdown.
