Greene arrives late, scores early in win over UV

Greene 2, Unadilla Valley 0

NEW BERLIN – Greene arrived late to its game with Unadilla Valley Monday, but was able to score early in a shutout victory over the Storm.

Traffic delays on Route 12 led to an extended warmup for Unadilla Valley, whose defense was flat-footed at the outset. Karl Zaengle scored just 1:21 into the game when his shot hit the upper crossbar, and caromed of the back of UV keeper Kyle King’s head and into the goal. “Kyle judged the shot well and jumped to ensure it wasn’t in,” said UV coach Ryan Houck. “It was just one of those flukey plays I haven’t seen before.”

Greene followed up that fortuitous bounce with what Houck called “classic Greene soccer.” Zaengle again initiated the offense after a UV defensive breakdown sending a pass to unguarded Luke Day for the goal 4:33 into the game. “It was a physical battle of wills after the first two goals,” Houck said

Connor Moriarity made five saves for Greene to earn the shutout, and King kept his team in the game making a diving save of a Day shot later in the game. King finished with seven saves.
