OXFORD – In a battle of coaches who were high school soccer teammates, Otselic Valley head coach Jake Preston had the upper hand on Oxford’s Matt Dorman as the Vikings used a single goal in the first half to prevail in a non-league matchup Monday.

Dorman and Preston played high school soccer together at Cincinnatus, and arranged this non-league matchup as a fun reunion in a competitive situation. “It was a tough one to lose, but a lot of fun,” Dorman said. “Our guys moved the ball well today and had some shots. It was a good change of pace.”

OV’s tally came midway through the first half after a failed clear attempt by the Oxford defense. Janzen Waltz collected the loose ball for the Vikings, and scored unassisted.

Oxford controlled play the last 10 minutes of the game pressuring in OV’s defensive zone. A couple of nice scoring opportunities were turned away by the Vikings and goalie Jon Liuzzo. “It was exciting near their end, and their defense did a good job of stopping us,” Dorman said.

Oxford plays at Norwich today.
