SMITHFIELD – According to various media sources, nine individuals – including six teachers from the Sherburne-Earlville school district – were injured in a motor vehicle accident earlier this morning.

The accident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. in the Town of Smithfield, Madison County, when the driver of the van carrying the S-E staff members allegedly ran a stop sign and was struck by a Department of Transportation dump truck.

Both vehicles left the roadway and overturned, said sources. Emergency responders were forced to cut off the roof of the van in order to extract the occupants and one of those individuals was subsequently airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. The five other occupants of the van and the three individuals who were in the DOT truck were transported to other hospitals in the area.

The van containing the S-E staff members was on its way to a teacher workshop in the Cicero area.

A complete story will appear in Thursday’s edition of The Evening Sun.
