Eric Walling and his younger cousin, Brenon Maynard, exude a quiet confidence on the golf course, an affable, personable nature off of it, and it appears both are headed toward a career in the golf business.
Walling, a 2012 Norwich graduate, recently completed his freshman year at Delhi Tech where his studies will ultimately lead him to a career as a golf teaching professional.
Walling went from promising NHS golfer as a seventh-grader to program stalwart. He qualified for the Section IV state team after his junior and senior years, the only person to accomplish that feat under longtime golf coach Bob Branham. He won the Chenango County Amateur before he even started his senior of high school, and was the tournament's runner-up each of the past two seasons.
Maynard, who will be a freshman at Unadilla Valley in the fall, burst onto the local golf scene early last year when he recorded a hole-in-one on the difficult 17th hole at Canasawacta Country Club.
