Economic Forecast: ‘We want Chenango to be a powerful player’

NORWICH – Some of the area’s prominent leaders in business, government and not-for-profit agencies gathered at the Silo Restaurant in Greene Wednesday as Commerce Chenango hosted its annual Economic Forecast Breakfast, an event that takes a look at how far Chenango County economic development has progressed in the last year and what to expect for the year to come.

The event featured keynote speaker Harvey Stenger, president of Binghamton University and co-chair of the Southern Tier Economic Development Council (STREDC). While Stenger’s primary focus is on Binghamton University, he was also influential in STREDC’s securement of $91.1 million in the New York State’s second round of economic development funding in December – $275,000 of which is slated for the Norwich-based Sunrise Family Farms to expand their enterprise into Greene with a new dairy processing plant focused on specialty yogurt.

The STREDC is one of 10 regional councils in the state, comprised of eight surrounding counties: Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Delaware, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga and Tomkins.
