Cutting away at charities

The knives are out for donations to charities.

Now wait a minute, Tom. Nobody wants to hurt our charities, do they?

Yes, they do. There are people who would be happy to gut our charities. And they are lobbying for this with our politicians. The politicians are caving in. By recommending that tax deductions for contributions to charities be cut.

The big charities are begging the politicians to leave the deductions alone. Because if deductions are cut, people will give them less money.

Now, who on earth would want to hurt these charities? Guys on the far left would. They camouflage their wishes within todayís fashionable mantra: ďThe rich donít pay their fair share. To make them pay more in taxes, get rid of some of the deductions for giving money to charities. Donít let them get tax deductions for setting up their fancy foundations.Ē

You know about the Ford Foundation. And the Rockefeller Foundation. Maybe you know Warren Buffett is giving most of his billions to Bill Gatesís charitable foundation to create a super-foundation. You may recall Ted Turner was giving a billion bucks to the UN from his foundation. You read about any number of gifts from any number of American foundations. To any number of charities and schools and causes.

Can you name any foundations in France? Germany? Britain? Not many, because there arenít many. This is because the taxman in those countries does not give the big deductions for the big donations. So those countries donít have many such foundations. They donít have many huge charities, supported by huge contributions.

Why not? Because the Left in those countries hates capitalism. Hates capitalists. The Left long ago attacked capital and those that owned and wielded capital. The Left elected politicians who taxed the bejeepers out of the capitalists.

The Left there hates the thought that a rich guy should decide what charity or cause he will bless with his money. The Left would rather have government choose who gets that money. They feel it is better to strip the money from the rich and give it to government. Then government can give the money to the university. Or the hospital. Or the needy. Or the symphony. The government can fund the school for autistic kids. Government can pick the winners and losers in the field of charities. And government, of course, wonít give money to any churches or private schools. Like that rich family wanted to do.

Next time you go to a concert, or gallery, or private college, check out their list of contributors. Some of them list thousands of donors. You wonít find similar lists in Europe. Or if you do, you will see the lists are shorter.

They are shorter because the rich donít give as much to charities. They give to the taxman instead. Under duress. The Left has made sure of this. And in Washington lately they have whispered in the ears of our politicians: ďPssst. This country would be better off with similar arrangements.Ē

The Left feel there is nothing that government cannot do better than individuals. Especially the rich ones.
