Chenango Valley Home recognizes ‘Still Creating’ artists, People’s Choice awardee

NORWICH – A small group of residents at the Chenango Valley Home, 24 Canasawacta St., gathered last week to recognize several of their own for their participation in the recent Still Creating III: The Artistry of Long-Term Care Residents senior art exhibit, which ran from Sept. 21 through Oct. 12 at the Chenango County Council of the Arts.

The popular exhibit featured the artwork of more than 50 senior residents hailing from the Chenango Valley Home, Chase Memorial Nursing Home, Valley View Manor, the Oxford Veterans’ Home and UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Chenango Valley Home resident Jenny Versteeg, in particular, was recognized, receiving the news that her artwork had been awarded the senior art gallery’s first-ever People’s Choice Award, voted on by those who made their way to the Council of the Arts for Still Creating III.

Michelle McIntyre, art teacher at the Chenango Valley Home, said she was “proud of each and every one” of her artists, adding that “it was great to see your work up there” and “you guys still have more to give.”

Versteeg, who began painting at the home in 2006, was “completely floored” by the news, said McIntyre, who informed the small crowd that this year’s People’s Choice winner had no idea she would be receiving the award.
