Letter to the Editor: Don’t let process devolve into a popularity contest

Editor,

I was pleased to see the recent editorial with regard to the trials and overall issues relating to Peter Wlasiuk which have embraced Chenango County for some 10 years.

Editorial leadership is a key role and responsibility of the press and I would like to encourage The Evening Sun to take a proactive role with the determination of the Chenango County Court Judge position.

Through your balanced, unbiased reporting and editorial leadership, The Evening Sun is in a strong position to inform and educate the community as to the importance of this position and why it is critical for the long term, (10 years), that decisions are made on the position, the key requirements of the role and those of a successful candidate, rather than to see the electoral process develop into a popularity contest marked by the number of banners, posters and the like that are being spread across the county suggesting that ‘posters vote’ or deliver legitimacy!

Your stated role as the ‘Chenango County, New York’s Hometown Daily Newspaper’ clearly makes The Evening Sun a lead player in providing the county with your editorial leadership and informative reporting such that the electoral outcome provides the strongest possible candidate into this most important role - for the next ten years!

Whilst the candidates appear to be capable of flying their own flags and outlining what they believe to be their best attributes, very clearly the community would benefit from knowing what the key roles, responsibilities and criteria are for the actual position. Your readers and the community, should have a good insight into the issues and the facts, as well as the various opinions that ebb and flow with regard to this position to which the candidates aspire.

Surely there is a role here whereby the requirements of the position can be identified, together with a summary that identifies the attributes of a good County Court Judge. This would go a long way to providing the balance of ‘What is Required’ (the position) against ‘What is Being Offered’ (the candidates).

As a ‘judicial or legal umpire’ the expertise, capability and experience of the best possible County Court Judge is surely different from the suite of skills found across the normal legal community, such that having a legal qualification is only a qualifying rather than a determining point.

I look forward to your positive response and provision of editorial leadership across the Chenango County community.
