Is there anyone else out there who just isn’t a morning person?
I’ve been at The Evening Sun for almost a year now, and that means waking up around 6 a.m. Monday-Friday every single week.
I really though that I’d be used to it by now, but no such luck. Every time my alarm goes off - or all three of my alarms - I let out the same pitiful moan and groan as I kick off the covers.
Has anyone noticed how the comfiness of your bed is directly proportional to how soon you have to get out of it?
2 a.m. - Bed is mildly comfortable, equivalent to a favorite armchair.
5:55 a.m. - Bed more closely resembles what one would think an angel sleeps upon, made entirely of the softest feathers, clouds and pure happiness.
Not to mention the fact that not only to I dislike mornings, I am a night owl and no matter how many hours I stay up, and how many days in a row I try and fall asleep early, my brain says NO.
It’s like as soon as the sun goes down, my brain has the capacity and ambition to attempt everything that I had to push myself to do in the morning.
I know there are many prescribed ways of dealing with that morning grogginess.
Caffeine - Only work for me in soda or energy drink form. Don’t know why, but coffee just doesn’t do it for me anymore.
Cold shower - Sure, it gets the blood flowing. However, I dislike the cold more than mornings, so I quickly left that one in the dust.
Exercise - Probably the best solution for me, but really it takes getting out of bed early enough to pull off a few jumping jacks and pushups instead of just slapping the snooze button a few times.
Honestly, until I actually get into work and crank out a few mental exercises i.e. reading the headlines of various newspapers or writing out a few creative sentences, I’m pretty much useless.
But, that’s why I love this job. Nothing gets the day going like having to throw together a well-written article before 9 a.m. (which is honestly when I’d wake up naturally if given the choice).
That being said, thanks to this column ... I’m awake!
