BAINBRIDGE – Funeral services for a fourth grader who fell from a Memorial Day parade float on Monday will be held later this week, and counselors at his school are offering grief support in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Teddy Cherniak, 10, of Bainbridge, was riding with members of his baseball team on the team’s float when the accident occurred, according to a number of sources. Reports say when the float stopped suddenly, the young boy fell over the side.

The accident took place at approximately 11:20 a.m., shortly after the town’s parade. He reportedly died later that afternoon at the Wilson Medical Center in Binghamton.

Cherniak was a fourth grader at the Greenlawn Elementary School in Bainbridge, who participated in a number of sports, choir and played trumpet with the school band, according to his obituary, which goes on to state that he “loved sports and was an avid participant in baseball, basketball and soccer.”
