NORWICH – Elmira made up a 10-point third-quarter deficit, and advanced to the STAC boys’ basketball junior varsity championship game defeating Norwich Wednesday night at Jack Jones Gymnasium, 57-56.

Rayshawn Brooks scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, and his runner in the paint gave his club a 57-54 lead with 1:27 left in the game.

Norwich’s Zan Stewart cut the lead to one with a driving layup at the 40-second mark. At that point, Norwich had just one team foul for the half, and went into foul mode to stop the clock. An Elmira turnover with four seconds left gave the JV Tornado one more opportunity. Stewart took the inbounds pass, but was unable to get a shot off.

Norwich (14-2) appeared to take control in the third quarter ripping off a 12-4 run to lead 45-35 with 1 1/2 minutes left in the stanza. Mike Oralls and Stewart hit back-to-back threes, Cody Barnes scored on an inside post move, and Matthew Burke completed a layup.

Elmira closed the quarter on a 7-0 spurt with Tyler Moffe’s jumper at the third-quarter buzzer making it 45-42.
